The resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is impossible without compromise, Adviser to the British Ambassador in Georgia on Regional Conflicts in the South Caucasus Kate Whyte said.
"The UK supports the work of the OSCE Minsk Group. But this does not mean that we do not support other aspirations aimed at resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," the adviser said, replying to a question asked by Trend News at the lecture on "Politics of Great Britain in the Caucasus" organized by the International School of Caucasian Studies at I. Chavchavadze Tbilisi State University.
The UK also supports civil society representatives in Azerbaijan and Armenia, who favor a peaceful settlement of the conflict, she said.
UK Ambassador to Georgia Denis Keefe added that Britain is a supporter of settling the conflict through peaceful means.
"I believe another war in the Nagorno-Karabakh would be a disaster," he said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
